COIN GRADING INFO
Coin authentication and grading services are available to the collector and investor, to confirm the authenticity of a coin, and determine it's particular state of preservation (grade).
Obviously the most important factor in coin certification is to determine the authenticity of a coin. Over the centuries, it was not uncommon for copies of rare or valuable coins to be manufactured, in order to fool a buyer. In many instances, mint marks have been added, removed, or altered, in order to artificially inflate the value of a coin. Determining whether a coin is an original is absolutely essential for the coin collector or investor. Independent 3rd party certification and grading services, like Accurate Coin Grading Service stake their reputations on being able to help an owner determine the authenticity of their coins.
The second major benefit to having a coin certified and graded by a 3rd party grading service, is to determine the specific state of condition a particular coin is in. The most important reason for doing this is to determine the value of the coin. Most coin values are determined by it’s state of preservation, it’s rarity, and also demand for that particular item.
Coin grading is subjective. Meaning, it is a matter of opinion of the person(s) grading the coin. However, there are numismatic industry standards utilized for the purpose of determining a coin‘s particular grade.
The industry standard scale used in determining a particular grade of a coin is the Sheldon 70 - Point Scale. Grades ranging from 1 (being lowest) to 70 (a perfect specimen) are used. Obviously the higher the number, the higher the state of preservation of the coin.
While there are published industry standards of the Sheldon 70 - Point Grading Scale, there are different interpretations of these standards by all independent 3rd party grading services. While some strictly adhere to the published and accepted standards, there are some that do not. Some of these 3rd party grading services over-exaggerate or over-grade the coins they certify, in order to artificially inflate the value of a coin. Some coin grading services will not even inform you that the coin you have submitted, has been artificially altered or cleaned. Both of those factors have a significant impact on the value of the coin. Caution and due diligence should be used when purchasing a certified coin, or when choosing an independent 3rd party grading service to certify and grade your coins.
Accurate Coin Grading Service will not artificially over-exaggerate, or purposefully over-grade any coin submitted to us.
